The "The Legacy of Cantonese Arts" Program is dedicated to commemorating Dr. Kwong Kai-to, who was an EdUHK Honorary Fellow, and a distinguished educator, a philanthropist, and cultural artist. Throughout his life, Dr. Kwong made significant contributions to the promotion of Chinese culture and the arts, showcasing various art forms within Chinese culture such as calligraphy, painting, literature, poetry, music, and drama, while also exploring the interrelationships among them.
Dr. Kwong Kai-to always attached great importance to the inheritance of Chinese arts and culture. Since its establishment, the Xiqu and Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre has organized a wide range of activities in research, education, and community outreach to promote Cantonese opera and cultural arts. Dr. Kwong deeply recognized the mission and achievements of the Centre. Either in his personal capacity, or through The Rural Training College Alumni Association, or through Jiato Hong Kong Holdings Limited, Dr. Kwong made donations to the Centre, initiating the " The Legacy of Cantonese Arts " Program in 2019.
The program has launched numerous projects to develop Cantonese opera education, such as the "Cantonese Opera Teaching Award for Hong Kong Music Teachers in Primary and Secondary Schools 2022" to promote Cantonese opera education, the "Excellence Award" as an extension activity of the program "Developing Chinese Culture and Life Education through Cantonese Opera Education in Primary and Secondary Schools", the "EdUHK Cantonese Opera Singing Group Annual Performance 2024" to encourage students to learn Chinese culture and Cantonese opera, as well as the "EdUHK Alumni Cantonese Opera Concert 2023" and community education seminars to further promote Cantonese opera culture.
