Advancing Chinese Traditional Culture in Greater Bay Area Schools - Symposium for Cantonese Opera Teaching (HK) 2025

Background

Cantonese opera is one of China's traditional theatrical forms, with a long history and rich cultural connotations. The inheritance of Cantonese opera is especially important and has great potential in primary and secondary education. To promote the inheritance and sustainable development of Cantonese opera, many primary and secondary schools in the Greater Bay Area have incorporated related content into their school-based curricula. Teachers are also actively exercising their creativity through various types of teaching activities to enhance students' learning outcomes and cultivate their interest in appreciating Cantonese opera. Although many teachers are enthusiastic about teaching Cantonese opera, there are still few platforms for communication among primary and secondary school teachers, and activities that strengthen connections among teachers across the Greater Bay Area are even rarer.

Therefore, organized by Xiqu and Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre, EdUHK and co-organized by Xiqu Centre, the West Kowloon Cultural District, purpose of the "Advancing Chinese Traditional Culture in Greater Bay Area Schools - Symposium for Cantonese Opera Teaching 2025" is to explore issues related to school-based education in Cantonese opera, promote Cantonese opera education in primary and secondary schools within the Greater Bay Area, and enhance students' understanding and interest in Cantonese opera. It is also expected to facilitate academic, educational, and cultural exchanges within the Greater Bay Area, encourage mutual learning among teachers, strengthen close cooperation among different regions, and promote the inheritance and development of Cantonese opera.

Aims

  • Enhancing the quality of Cantonese opera education in primary and secondary schools in the Greater Bay Area: By organizing the symposium, teachers can share their teaching experiences, resources, and methods with one another, thereby improving their teaching skills and promoting the integration of Cantonese opera education into primary and secondary school curricula.
  • Cultivating students' interest and appreciation for Cantonese opera: By drawing on the teaching experiences of teachers from various regions and putting them into practice, we can optimize students' learning and experiences of Cantonese opera, thereby fostering their interest and appreciation for it and igniting their love for traditional Chinese culture.
  • Promoting exchange and cooperation among primary and secondary schools in the Greater Bay Area: The seminars will attract teachers from different regions, providing them with a platform for communication and collaboration, and facilitating interaction and cooperation among primary and secondary schools in the Greater Bay Area.
